I started thinking it would be wonderful to take some translated versions of my favorite children’s stories to Peru as a gift to the kids. I started wondering where I would find this sort of treasure. The thought of scouring Amazon for hours felt too daunting.
So, you might not be surprised to hear that something wonderful happened when Matt and I visited Santa Fe in March. During our days filled with walking and touring, we stumbled upon an upstairs bookstore. You know the kind teeming with books from floor to ceiling and doorways leading to other rooms with more doorways leading to more rooms? Oh, I know you’re a savvy bookstore goer. Well, this bookstore had an entire (albeit tiny) room dedicated to children’s books and they were all written in Spanish!
The kind bilingual shopkeeper was very motivated and helped me choose a few books; some that had been translated as well as one that is an original Peruvian story. I found the Velveteen Rabbit and the Ugly Duckling in Spanish and some sweet little books about being loved.
It was one of those moments when the wish in your heart becomes true in a way you hadn’t imagined. It made my heart smile. It seemed like just another nugget of inspiration and joy that I hope to pass along to the kids in Peru.
I hope they like the stories. Who knows, maybe they’ve been wishing for them…?
